A regular question that we get asked is how many downlights should I install? Or how many downlights do I need? There isn't always an easy answer to this as their are many variables to consider.

Different rooms require different levels of light as they are used for different purposes. Lighting standards only state recommended lux levels for commercial projects, we only have rough guidelines for homes.

Ideally your living room lighting should be illuminated to 100-300 lux. Take a room that is 3.6M wide x 4.8M in length, with a height of 2.7M. Using 6x 50W halogen downlights would provide an average of 160 lux. This would be adequate for watching TV etc but if you are doing something else like craft work or other hobbies you might want more light and more downlights.

We've uploaded an example of this lounge room lighting design below.
