Trimless wall lights, also known as plaster-in wall lights, are a modern lighting solution designed to create a seamless architectural finish. Unlike traditional wall lights that have a visible trim or frame, trimless fittings are installed directly into the wall and then plastered over so that the fitting becomes part of the wall itself.
Once the wall is plastered and painted, only the light aperture remains visible. The result is a clean, minimalist lighting effect that blends perfectly with modern interiors, perfectly matching the decor.
This style of lighting has become increasingly popular in contemporary homes, hotels and architectural projects where designers want lighting to enhance the space without distracting from the design.
Trimless wall lights are recessed into plasterboard or masonry walls during installation. The edge of the fitting is designed to sit beneath the plaster layer so that once the wall is skimmed, the fitting sits perfectly flush with the surface.
This means trimless wall lights must be installed before the final plaster skim during the construction or renovation stage. After plastering, the fitting blends seamlessly into the wall for a smooth architectural finish. Here is a screenshot from the Astro Borgo installation instructions. Cut the hole in the wall, mount the wall light and skim over it. The lights can be removed from the wall for maintenance.

One of the most common uses for trimless wall lights is staircase lighting. Installed along the wall beside the steps, these lights provide soft illumination that improves safety while creating a modern lighting effect.
Small recessed lights can be spaced evenly along the staircase to gently highlight each step or every few steps.

Trimless wall lights are also frequently installed along hallways to provide subtle wayfinding lighting. Because they sit flush with the wall, they maintain a clean appearance while providing just enough light to guide movement through the space.
Architectural wall lighting can also be used to highlight textured walls, decorative finishes or feature areas within a room.
Trimless wall lights come in several shapes and styles depending on the lighting effect required.
Many designs use integrated LED technology to keep the fitting compact while delivering efficient lighting.
One of the best known examples of trimless lighting is the Astro Borgo series. These recessed wall lights (also known as LED marker lights) are designed to be plastered directly into the wall to create a completely flush finish. The Borgo series is also available with a trim in a selection of frame sizes.
The trimless range is available in 4 frame sizes which include:
Each of them is available in 2 colour temperatures; extra warm white 2700K and warm white 3000K.

The Astro Borgo Trimless 65, for example, is a compact wall light that uses a small integrated LED to produce a gentle pool of warm light with 70-80 lumens, making it ideal for staircases and corridors. The fitting is recessed into the wall and installed before plastering so that it blends seamlessly into the surface once finished.
These fittings are typically used in multiples along staircases or hallways to create a subtle architectural lighting effect.
Trimless wall lights are available with both integrated LED modules and replaceable lamps. The integrated versions such as the Borgo operate on 350mA or 700mA and require an additional constant current LED driver which converts the AC (Alternating Current) mains voltage into the required DC (Direct Current) output. You can either use 1 driver per wall light or wire multiple wall lights from the same driver.
Integrated LED models are the most common for architectural lighting because they allow the fitting to remain small and discreet. Some marker lights use very low power LEDs of around 1W to 3W to produce soft guidance lighting.
Other plaster-in wall lights use standard lamp holders such as GU10, G9 or E14. These fittings allow you to install your own LED bulb and change it in the future if required. This gives you the choice of using different brightness's and colour temperatures.
Many integrated LED trimless wall lights operate using a remote LED driver. For example, some recessed marker lights require a constant current LED driver installed remotely within the wall or ceiling void. Astro Lighting have a very handy LED driver calculator, just enter the model number of the light fitting, the quantity per circuit and choose between dimmable and non dimmable.
Dimming performance depends on the driver and control system used. If the driver supports dimming, the wall light can be dimmed using a compatible LED dimmer switch or home automation system. Systems such as Lightwave can allow for scene control which can include switching on and dimming multiple lights at the same time.
Wall lights that use replaceable LED bulbs can usually be dimmed simply by installing dimmable LED lamps.
Because the fitting disappears into the wall, the lighting effect becomes the focus rather than the fixture itself.
If you're looking to create a clean architectural lighting design, trimless wall lights are an excellent choice. These plaster-in fittings provide subtle illumination while maintaining a minimalist appearance.
