Lighting is no longer just for visibility – it’s a style statement and a functional asset, especially when integrated into your home’s storage. Whether you're illuminating a bookcase, display cabinet, wardrobe, or sideboard, LED cabinet lights provide an energy-efficient and modern solution. This guide will help you understand your options and showcase some of the best products available from Downlights Direct.

Perfect for lining shelves, wardrobes, or the back of floating shelves. Strip tape is flexible, can be cut to size, and is often used with aluminium profiles for a clean, diffused glow. With cut points from just 50mm you can create a continuous, bright lighting effect without any dots or dark edges. The thin LED strip lights can remain invisible, producing light without looking unsightly. For this reason, LED strip tape has become a popular choice for kitchen under cabinet lighting.
With options available in a variety of colour temperatures such as modern cool white 4000K.

Or cozy warm white, but if you're not such which colour temperature to choose or want to be able to alternate between different lighting tones, we've got CCT LED strip tape which has the full colour temperature spectrum in one; 2700K to 6500K (extra warm white to daylight).

Ideal for highlighting specific items or areas, these lights are recessed or surface-mounted. They create focused, dramatic effects and are popular in display cabinets. The Integral EvoFire mini is recessed mounted with a 45mm cut out size and uses the smaller MR11 GU10 LED lamp which are available in dimmable and non dimmable variants.
Recess mounting downlights into shelves can be tricky, which is why many users opt for LED strip lights or surface mounted fittings. At just 6mm in height, these Malmbergs cabinet lights are ultra thin while producing an impressive 175 lumens per fitting.
Linear strips or batten-style lights offer uniform lighting across shelves and cabinets. Easy to install, with mains voltage operation, they often come with plug-and-play options and are available in various lengths. They are physically chunkier than LED tape and while they come in different lengths, the lengths are limited to 313mm, 543mm and 873mm for this Aurora version shown below, which doesn't always match every cabinet size.
For wardrobes or bookcases, aim for 100–200 lumens per metre. Display units might require softer lighting, while wardrobes benefit from brighter, neutral white tones for clarity.
Many LED cabinet lights are dimmable when used with compatible drivers, particularly the low voltage lights as you can select a dimmable driver. Consider control types:
Use cable clips or mini-trunking to hide wires. For LED tape, place inside profiles (surface or recessed) for better diffusion. Recessed cabinet lights require drilling where space is often limited. Plan power sources early, especially for hardwired setups.
If you're struggling to run a cable or want a quick solution, you could consider wire-free lights such as the Integral PIR Sensor Sensorlux Cabinet Wardrobe Light shown below. The long-life battery can last for a few weeks depending on usage, when it runs out just recharge it with the USB charger. The impressive light output is clean & bright at 100 lumens. For additional brightness you can position multiple lights next to each other to form a continuous light. To retain battery life, they have a PIR (Passive-Infrared) sensor which automatically activates and deactivates them or you can switch to manual mode.
With four selectable colour temperatures (2700K to 6000K), these versatile lights are ideal for any mood or function – from warm ambient lighting in a lounge display to bright, clean lighting in a wardrobe.
Delivering bright, focused light, this is perfect for feature lighting inside glass cabinets or shelving. The COB (Chip On Board) technology ensures high brightness and excellent colour rendering.
Modern and ultra-slim, the Targa LED is perfect for minimalist applications where space is limited but style is key. Ideal for floating shelves, sideboards, or inside modern display cabinets. Available in a rectangular style shown below or a smaller square version.
Whether you're upgrading your wardrobes or adding a touch of class to your living room storage, LED cabinet lighting is a smart, stylish choice. With dimmable, tunable and wireless options, lighting your home has never been more versatile. Explore more at Downlights Direct and bring your storage to life.
So first a trial fit - a 40cm line of light in a small closed cabinet, Undercounter light comes on when door opened, off when closed. Just to learn how.
Can the colour temperature be variable?
Also like to try a Leyton Targa Slim LED light.
I have the cabinet and a 13amp socket within 1m
Can you supply everything else I need?
Thanks
Derek

But for 40cm its probably not worth it as you need other controllers to change the colour temperature.
This door sensor would work:
