How to Dim LED Strip Lights Effortlessly

Dimmable LED strip tape is not just a single product—it’s a complete lighting system that includes the LED tape, a dimmable LED driver, and an LED-compatible dimmer switch. This versatile setup allows you to adjust light levels and customise the atmosphere in any space, whether it's a modern kitchen, stylish living room, or ambient commercial environment.

A suitable power supply is essential for LED strip lights. Most dimmable LED drivers are designed to be hardwired into the mains circuit, providing a reliable and permanent power solution. Careful planning ensures the system meets both performance and safety requirements, resulting in a durable and efficient lighting setup.

Choosing the Right Components

  • Total wattage of the LED tape: Multiply the watts per metre by the total length of your LED run.
  • Dimmable LED driver: Choose a driver that matches or exceeds your total wattage - e.g., for 75W of LED tape, a 75W or 90W driver is required.
  • Voltage match: Ensure the voltage output of the driver (12V or 24V) matches the LED strip tape.
  • Compatible dimmer switch: Choose a rotary dimmer, smart switch, remote, or app-controlled system that supports LED dimming smoothly and flicker-free.

Mains Dimmable LED Drivers

We stock a wide range of mains dimmable LED drivers (TRIAC type), available in 12V DC and 24V DC. From miniature drivers with a 0.75W minimum load to high-capacity 300W models, we offer solutions for both small and large installations. TRIAC dimming is one of the most cost-effective methods for dimming LED tape with a standard wall dimmer switch.

LED Compatible Dimmer Switches

A compatible dimmer switch must be leading edge or trailing edge. Options range from simple rotary dimmers like the Varilight V-Pro, which handles up to 120W, to higher-capacity models like the V-Com for longer runs. You can also integrate dimmable strip lights with smart systems such as Lightwave, Lutron or Rako.

Dimmable & Colour Temperature Adjustable Options

Our Sunset Strip LED Tape is a modern innovation—it dims not only in brightness but also in colour temperature. Starting at 3000K, it warms to 1800K as it dims, all through a standard dimmer switch and dimmable driver - no special controller needed. Perfect for ambient kitchens or relaxing living rooms, this tape offers both functionality and atmosphere.

Single Colour vs RGB / RGBW / CCT LED Strip Tape

Single colour LED tape (e.g., warm white, cool white, blue) can be dimmed using the components described above. For RGB, RGBW, or CCT adjustable tape, dimming and control are done via a dedicated controller, which requires a non-dimmable LED driver. These options allow you to create mood lighting, dynamic colour scenes, or tunable whites to match any room or time of day.

Profiles, Diffusers & Waterproof Options

LED tape can be installed in aluminium profiles with diffusers to improve light output, prevent glare, and protect against dust and damage—especially useful under cabinets. For bathrooms, kitchens or outdoor use, IP-rated waterproof LED strip lights are essential to guard against moisture and ensure long-term durability.

Installation & Safety Tips

  • Handle LED tape with care - avoid touching electrical components directly.
  • Use only the marked cut lines for trimming tape to avoid damage.
  • Secure the tape using adhesive backing or clips, and avoid sharp bends or tension.
  • Keep away from children and pets; components can pose safety risks if mishandled.
  • Use IP-rated tape in wet environments and follow manufacturer guidelines for safe installation.
  • Never modify or repair drivers or LED tape yourself- seek a professional or contact us for help.
