The Lightwave Smart LED Driver is transforming home lighting, offering seamless smart control over LED strips. In this case study, we explore how two customers, Tom and Scott, who have integrated this product into their homes for enhanced lighting experiences.

What is a Lightwave Smart Driver?

A Lightwave Smart LED Driver is an innovative device that integrates a power supply, LED driver, and RF (Radio Frequency) communication into a single unit, simplifying the installation and control of LED strip lighting. Operating directly from a 230V mains input without the need for an external power supply, it provides a 24V DC constant voltage output, which is compatible with various LED strips, including single-colour, RGB, RGBW, RGBWW, and tunable white LEDs (colour temperature adjustable).

Users can manage their lighting through the Lightwave App or Lightwave smart switches, enabling dimming, switching, and color adjustments. Additional features include energy monitoring, flicker-free dimming with a 750Hz refresh rate, and high efficiency at 93% under full load. The device also offers overcurrent and overtemperature protection, ensuring safe and reliable operation. Its streamlined design makes it ideal for both residential and commercial lighting applications, providing a user-friendly solution for modern smart lighting needs.

App Control

Available in 100W and 200W versions depending on your total wattage. If you're using LED strip tape, the 200W version allows you to power longer runs from one driver. If your load is over 200W, multiple smart drivers can linked together behind the scenes and controlled at the same time. The possibilities are endless with this advanced technology and because you don't need to purchase an additional LED driver (power supply), it doesn't cost very much to produce a user-friendly, modern lighting setup that you can control with your smartphone.

Smart LED Strip Lighting for a Cozy Lounge

Tom's Experience

Tom wanted a simple yet effective way to add smart lighting to his lounge with colour changing effects. With the Lightwave smart driver and a self-adhesive LED strip, installation was effortless. After a quick setup, the system integrated smoothly with his Lightwave setup, allowing full control via the Lightwave app.

Smart lighting made easy

One of Tom’s favorite features is the ability to automate his lighting. His LED strip is part of his ‘Evening Mood’ scene, automatically turning on with a warm glow. He manually adjusts the color and brightness as needed, typically keeping it at just 1-2% brightness while watching TV.

To enhance his experience, he has also started experimenting with automations that change the LED colors every 30 minutes, adding a dynamic touch to his space.

Smart Under-Cabinet Kitchen Lighting

Scott's Experience

Scott installed the 100W Lightwave Smart LED Driver to control RGBW LED strips under his kitchen cabinets. RGBW strip lighting is a combination of RGB (Red, Green, Blue) and white 4000K (cool white) in one neat LED strip tape. It has both colour changing and single colour LED chips on the same strip light. This combination provides you with colour changing and cool white effects in one. You can set it to a primary colour like blue, then switch to cool white 4000K or mix cool white and colour changing to produce some wonderful lighting effects. This LED tape is also available in RGBWW, which is colour changing and warm white.

Using a Lightwave wall mounted smart switch in a two-way automation setup, he can turn the lights on and off easily. Either from a programmed button on the smart switch or with his smartphone.

Since he primarily needs white light for cooking, Scott created an automation that resets the color to white whenever the lights are switched off, ensuring they’re ready for functional use with the cool white setting whenever they're switched back on.

Additionally, he has integrated the smart driver with Home Assistant via HomeKit, enabling advanced controls like adjusting white temperatures and automating lighting based on home events. For instance, he has set the lights to turn on when movement is detected on his doorbell camera, creating the impression that someone is home. This can act as a deterrent for intruders and is particularly useful when you're not home.

If you're already a Lightwave user, the smart driver can be connected to your existing system without any additional items.

Lightwave Pro Tip

As the smart driver is carrying the load, you can control this with a wire-free smart switch and position anywhere you like. Wire-free smart switches are batter powered and can be stuck to any service. You can then turn any button into a scene or use the magic button, which allows you to create scenes of your choosing by double tapping a button. For example you could double tap the up button and your lights would turn to red at 50% brightness.

Using the App you could program scenes throughout the day, if you had colour temperature adjustable LED strip tape, you could automatically switch your lighting on at dawn at a cozy 2200K and have different colour activations throughout the day to reflect your natural circadian rhythm. At 12PM your lights could automatically switch to a brighter daylight 6500K effect.
