Bulb Types - Incandescent

Incandescent light bulbs or incandescent lamps produce light by heating a metal wire to an extremely high temperature until the wire filament glows. The wire is protected from the air by a glass bulb which is either evacuated or filled with inert gas. These bulbs types are easily recognisable although they are being phased out in favour of LED lighting technology.

Known as a GLS (General Lighting Service) lamp, many consumers know them as light bulbs. The popular wattage options are 60W and 100W and the cap types are Bayonet Cap (BC) and Edison Screw (ES). Other shapes include golf balls which are a stubbier, shorter design and candles which are a thinner, more elegant shape.

As LED lighting technology continues to flourish, its gradually taking over the world. Even government bodies such as the EU are creating laws that enforce you to make the switch over, so you don't really have a choice but to be energy efficient.
